Royal Gorge Tour

Drive Dates: Thursday, April 30 and Saturday, May 2*

Total Drive Distance: 150 miles

Estimated total tour duration: 6 hours

An unforgettable experience awaits on the Royal Gorge Bridge, the highest suspension bridge in the United States, towering 955 feet above the Arkansas River. Traffic on the bridge is usually reserved only for pedestrians, but we've been granted special permission to travel as a group across the bridge and back, pausing to take some photos on the bridge itself. The steel structure is covered with 1292 wooded planks and is 18 feet wide. It was the highest in the world until 2001 and at a cost just less than a new GT2 RS ($350,000), construction took only 6 months to complete in 1929.

After our visit to the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, we will continue the tour on some great curved roads around the Cover Mountain area on the Gold Belt Scenic Byway and end at our lunch spot, The Holy Cross Abbey in Cañon City. The Abbey was built in 1924 and retains much of its Gothic architecture and peaceful atmosphere. The Winery at the Holy Cross Abbey also produces award-winning wines.

Our tour officially ends after lunch. For those who wish to return to THE BROADMOOR together, the tour leaders will depart shortly after lunch for a leisurely drive back to the resort. Or stay in the Cañon City area and explore on your own.

Other local sites and interests in the area include the Royal Gorge Route Railroad (check out the Navigator’s Day Off activity), and the Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center.

*Please note that on Saturday, May 2, there will be two Royal Gorge tours to accommodate more cars and participants. They will be noted on the registration form as Royal Gorge A and Royal Gorge B.
