Cradle of Forestry

Thursday, Sept 21 and Saturday, Sept 23

A scenic drive southwest of Asheville nestled in Pink Beds Valley is the Cradle of Forestry in America, the birthplace of science-based forest management and a living legacy made possible by George and Edith Vanderbilt of the nearby Biltmore Estate. Some 87,000 acres of the Vanderbilt’s “Pisgah Forest” tract became the nucleus of the Pisgah National Forest, established in 1916. The Forest Discovery Center has an interactive exhibit hall, the Giving Tree Gift Shop, and the Cradle Cafe. Two interpretive trails, a Forest Discovery Trail, seven historic buildings, a 1915 Climax logging locomotive, an old sawmill, and numerous crafters all bring Western North Carolina’s past to life.
